In a critical election year, Democrats are looking to flip a once reliably Republican Louisiana congressional seat.

Voting is underway in Louisiana for the Nov. 5 elections. Polls for the election opened at 6 a.m. and will remain open until 8 p.m. tonight. The Presidential Race and all six Congressional Races are on the ballot.

The case, which will not affect this election cycle, involves a legal fight over how the state draws its voting maps and could determine the political power of Black voters there.

Noting the size of the state’s Black population, civil rights advocates challenged the map in a Baton Rouge-based federal court and won a ruling from U.S. District Judge Shelly Dick that the districts likely discriminated against Black voters.

Amendment No. 1 would expand the commitment to the Coastal Protection and Restoration Fund to add federal money Louisiana receives from offshore wind, solar and other other alternative or renewable energy sources generated in federal Gulf waters off the state’s coast. Monies could come from federal lease sales, operating fees and other agreements.

Graves' District 6 was reconfigured to create the second majority-minority district. It now stretches from Shreveport, in Louisiana's northwest corner, to Baton Rouge, in the southeast, and connects predominantly Black populations from Shreveport, Alexandria, Lafayette and Baton Rouge.

The Republican-controlled Louisiana legislature approved the map in January after U.S. District Judge Shelly Dick in 2022 ruled that a map it previously adopted containing only a single Black-majority congressional district in the state unlawfully harmed Black voters.
